Typically the guy never gets an engagement ring...he gets his wedding band on "Wedding Day."
Your engagement comes in a set so if you go out "ring shopping" you see the engagement ring (which has the diamond on it) then the "Wedding band" is the second ring. You'll see.
If you are not going ring shoppin with your boyfriend anytime soon, I'd suggest you go out on your own and find out what you like. Casually back to the same shop and show your "boyfriend" what you like so if he ever decides to Pop the question he won't purchase the wrong shape or something that doesn't fit etc...
Basically "register" for the ring of your dreams. If you aren't picky about it and trust your guy...then let him surprise you. This was not what I wanted. I wanted to have a little more say over what I was going to wear on my hand for the rest of my life.
You'll find out a lot of information if you go and talk to a jeweler. They can give you the idea of price and what looks good on your hand.
I'm not sure what rings cost these days...but the rule of thumb is that its about three months salary. Don't let him buy you a substandard ring and say he'll upgrade later. Get the big rock NOW!!!!!
