You didn't say what year the bike is, but 2,000 miles on any bike other than a new one is very low meaning the bike has sat for long periods of time without riding. Sounds like your battery either needs to be recharged or replaced.
Also sounds like you may be flooding the bike trying to start-up with a weak battery, or you may be running your battery down by flooding the bike. Starting the bike cold, always open the choke, then hit the start button. Stay off the gas until the idle speed begins to race. Close the choke. then you can give it some gas.
