My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

This is an interesting article I read awhile ago, about a girl brought up in the traveller lifestyle, who decided to get an education:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeanRABtyle/2009/sep/07/gypsy-childhood-prejudice-education

She seems to be a nice, intelligent person. She describes her experiences growing up and she herself admits that

"Marrying first cousins is also common among Gypsies (and a potential genetic timebomb)".

It sounRAB like they hard to work quite hard and contary to popular opinion were not raking in cash, on the rob, selling heather or pegs, nor slagging about either. She discusses some of the prejudice she has had to encounter on the way.

Joan is living in Ireland with her potato husband. She's alright I believe.

She posts on facebook. I don't do facebook, heard about her from a friend.

:D LOL!

I bet he did as well! And pulled that 'pwoper nawty' face he always pulls after saying it!

I'm gonna have to go and find that episode now and watch it!:o Cause i want to know if he does now! :o

Gorgeous George said it all for me.

The ones we had parked in a field at the back of our house were complete dogs. Our kiRAB toys stolen from the garden. Horse, human (complete with toilet roll) & dog excrement, just left where it came out. Disgusting.

Some of them were hardly wearing a thing. If me or any of my fellow students walked around like that I'm sure we would get laughed at and get strange comments from people. And did you see what they were wearing to the Appleby Horse Fair? I thought if you went to see something like that you'd need wellies instead of heels/wedges and to dress down.

Hot Gossip, thanks for your post
It's nice to hear someone else's positive experiences with travellers.

I remember all their ornaments and glass were really high quality and I do recall having heard something about all the seperate bowls for washing! Those mum's ruled their children, so there was no way they would be messing with those ornaments! ;)

I totally agree with you over their clothes, its not to my taste but neither are a lot of people's and if people are happy with what they wear then who am I to criticise!

A lot of those young girls tonight were very beautiful. Joan was absolutely gorgeous.

I also agree with you in regard to the horse issue. I've never been to a gypsy horse fair, but I would definitely like to go to one.

As you say, they are their livelihood so why abuse it? I'm not saying that things incidents haven't happened but through going racing and to point to point meets I've come to learn that the Irish and travellers love their horses and what they don't know about them you could write on the back of a stamp!

It was just all the negativity in this thread that got me to post and I'm really glad to hear that there are a couple of us on here who have had more positive experiences.

Btw, my fella who has not come across travellers before, was absolutely gobsmacked at how pretty some of those girls were! Though he had to admit they were too young for him!

"people only have bad impressions of travellers from what they read in the media"

Or if you live in an area where theres lots of them ;)

That's the thing I find so hard to understand. The families I knew all brought up their children with similar attitudes, that they would marry within the travelling community and have children; but back then their children/teenagers didn't dress so skimpy, but then that was the 1980's.

Perhaps they have been influenced by the celebrity culture?

When I knew some, they would really dress up for their events, lots of gold etc and not to my taste, but their clothes were always appropriate and nowhere near as brief as now.

Do you mean Joan? I also thought she didnt look very happy whilst reciting her vows. Also, it was a shame that her dress was so puffed out, there was no room for her father to walk her down the aisle.
