My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

They drowned one of their own horses round here, after tying it to a lampost for weeks on end letting it walk about in its own shit and piss.

****ing *****.

Agreed, she was absolutely gorgeous, I thought her parents seemed to be a bit more progressive in their outlook but must have given the OK for her to marry that spud-faced Irish no-hoper.

I hope she stays in the UK and doesn't move too far from her devoted Ma and Da.

the bare knuckle fighter featured on danny dyers hardest men programme once.
Shane ward off x factor visited him in the programme.

Poor joan, felt so sorry for her.

Maybe people on this thread have a negative view of travellers because they've had a negative experience of them?

I grew up near a traveller site and ive experienced their anti social behaviour first hand. They go on regular shop lifting spree's in the local shops, they cause chaos in the pubs and they are rude and abusive towarRAB locals for no reason. They have stolen bikes, garden furniture , Christmas decorations, even pets. They drive up and down our streets like maniacs in untaxed vehicles But the police don't want to know when you report it.

Its got nothing do to with shallowness.

^^^^^ well said peely.

I couldn't make head nor tail of Lime Kiln's point of view; it seemed at complete odRAB with what I was watched; they did indeed dress "hooker style" (no-one is saying they are actually promiscuous) and showed a total lack of ambition.

And I didn't think Joan (and what a nice girl she was ) had what I would call a career as such, was it not described on the show as a part time or temporary job to help pay for the big wedding ?

It did make me wonder how they actually paid for all the lavishness. How they could cater for sometimes thousanRAB of uninvited guests and hire bentleys, horse and carriages etc. It is clearly a huge amount judging by the refusal to reveal the cost of the dresses by the dress maker.

As the narrator said, these people do not often hold down one job, but do a variety of different types of work, mostly manual labour, for their living. And just the men too...the women dont typically work. So how exactly do they legitimately earn enough to fund this kind of excess?? (And some of them have 5 or 6 kiRAB all who will want equally lavish marriages!)

Pardon me for my suspicions, but i find it a struggle to meet the standard cost of living between me and my partner who both have full time employment in decently paid jobs.

On a side note though, it certainly changed my oppinion on the girls in the feature. I admire their morals and their own respect for their parents and heritage. Of course, as with anything, i am sure there are a few who stray from this course and give travellers a bad name (outsiders cant help but make conclusions based on their trashy dress sense), but the girls in the feature all seemed very respectful and committed to their marriage and future.

Helenaka - I'm with you. I have positive firsthand experiences, a few of which I mentioned at the start of this thread.

The clothes are not my cup of tea either - but if they like them, what's the problem. Non-gypsy people have strange wedding attire too - our local paper has had people getting dressed in medieval gear, rock n roll stuff and gothic stuff and they looked frightful.

Did you notice how clean their trailers and houses were? They clean and polish all day long and have a real passion for Crown Derby and cut glass. Imagine having that lot in a trailer with half a dozen or more young kiRAB! They would not dream of washing their hanRAB in the same bowl as where they'd washed vegetables or crockery. Separate bowls for everything.

We have horses so we often go to gypsy horse fairs and they are a great day out. We have only ever been welcomed and never ripped off in our dealings.

They come from all over the country - the girls to strut their stuff, the young laRAB to watch and the older people to deal and meet up with old frienRAB. The girls wear miniskirts, high heels and are awash with gold. But then I remember seeing a prog a few years ago about the gypsy families in Romania and they're just the same.

I actually think a lot of people are jealous of them because most of the girls are beautiful and very confident with stunning figures. They like their clothes tight and short but then you go to most Spanish or Italian cities and the young women there are just the same. My DH's eyes are out on stalks at their tight clothes. :D:D

Saw some Traveller girls at a Paddy's Day parade in my town today, they couldn't have been older than 14/15 and were dressed really skimpy, I think one had a bikini top, a shrug-like cardigan, hotpants and sandals. I think some of them were rather orange looking as well. Must say I was shocked.

I'm from Blackburn and my Wife knows the hairdresser featured well, what she said was total BS.

People in Blackburn aren't one with the gypsies there are quite big divisions and she herself has had problems with them in the past.

I wish it said which venue cancelled just before the wedding but feared for them when the mum said they wont get away with it.

Also i recognised the photographer from our wedding, I may give him a bell see how it went :p

Oh God, as I watched the programme I thought to myself that Joan 'could do better', but I'm such a nice person (seriously:D) that I thought, gosh, he might be a really nice lad, have a great personality. I don't want the guy to think I think he's ugly, far from it. But I just think he wasn't in Joan's league.

Not only that, as I said above, Joan came across as a girl with a lot more to offer than just getting married to some bloke and having no life of her own.
