My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

Was the earlier post true - about the horse drowning? That makes me so sad - and is my biggest problem with them - the cruelty to animals/horses thing.
 
Their "morals" are just a direct import from their Catholic religion.
(Marry early, drop out as many kiRAB as you can and no sex before marriage. Also it's the female's duty to make babies and keep the home whilst it's the man's responsibility to provide money (however they get it) - All extremely Catholic values)

Everything else is just chav mentality.

So take a chav and give it Catholic religion and you have what we saw on the programme.
 
mostly i don't get the complaint about discrimination.
if you are a itinerant population liability becomes an issue.
its all about accountability.
 
Ermmm.....I've only seen "hookers" on TV, and yes the girls did look like that. However, I would agree that we shouldn't form judgements based purely on dress sense, though its difficult not to form a judgement when their dress sense is so highly sexualised and revealing.

Secondly, I wouldn't call the girls stupid, but they seemed pretty ignorant of what goes on outside their culture. Their parents seemed to be pretty keen to keep them ignorant so they could retain their gypsy culture. The girls are definitely unambitious. Ambition is about trying to achieve something, whether that be work or status, that is better than what would ordinarily be expected. The girls are expected to get married at a young age. Ambition is not about living up to the normal expectations of the community...ie getting married to someone. The boys seemed to want to continue in their gypsy tradition as well in terms of what kind of work they looked for. For them to be considered ambitious, I think they would have to look further afield, at more education and better jobs. Wanting to provide for one's family is not ambitious. Wanting to better oneself is.
 
It was interesting that she said "we argue half the time" also, yet in the documentary it said they had only met twice before getting married. I felt so sorry for her as it did seem as though that was an arranged marriage she'd been pushed into. I wonder where they ended up living.
 
Too late, she realised she'd made a mistake in marrying that fella. She was so beautiful, she could have married a millionaire, with those looks.

I sincerly hope she finRAB happiness but I wouldn't bet on it.
 
I watched this last time and recorded it last night and watched it again.

I cried (both times) watching Joan, she was like a lamb to the slaughter. As I commented on this thread before, no woman should look that unhappy on her wedding day. When she was dancing with her dad and then her mum, and crying. :cry: You could see that the woman who made her dress was quite concerned for her as well.

She is such a beautiful girl and she came across as really nice too, I hope her hubby realises how lucky he is.

I would love to know how she is getting on now.
 
There will be Romany Gypsies in Ireland, not many though they don't get on very well with the tinkers, The point I am trying to make is there are no IRISH Romany Gypsies, only tinkers, they may be thought of as Gypsies, but they are not, ask them, they are tinkers, and I hope they are proud to be so. They do make a lot of mess, and the truth is they don't really care, If they settle on a permanent site they are very clean people, as with real Gypsies you only know what they want you to know, so If you read about what they have told someone take it with a pinch of salt. this the only way for them to survive against adversity.;)
 
The best part for me was seeing one young bridegroom running up the stairs two at a time on his wedding night. I wondered where they get all the money from for these weddings.
