My 99 Ford Explorer is overheating. Is it the thermostat?

If it over heats at speeds over 60 then that is the water pump and it run you about 100 bucks for the part or so and probably 60 to 90 mins of labour fees.

I have a 99 Ford Explorer that overheats a lot. Someone told me that it was a cracked head gasket but I thought that smoking was an indicator of a cracked head gasket. My Explorer doesn't smoke or anything it just overheats if I go past 60 for several minutes. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with a 99 Ford Explorer overheating and if so what was the cause of it and how much it cost to fix. By the way, my Explorer is an Eddie Bauer edition if that makes any difference. Thanks..
 
Is it a 4.0 OHC V6 or 5.0L H.O. V8? A bad water pump as mentioned or even a bad fan clutch (if it's a 4.0L). Check your oil and make sure it isn't milky. THAT is the indicator of a bad head gasket (coolant in the oil).
 
The first place I'd check is the thermostat. They sometimes stick when they have been in service for several seasons. Follow the upper radiator hose back to the engine to the thermostat housing. That's where you'll find it. Just be sure to drain a little coolant from the radiator first before you remove the housing so you don't spill coolant all over the engine.
