my 99 chevy tracker makes loud rattling noise that sounds like it's coming from...

...under the hood or car? it goes for awhile then stops, then starts up again...it is the worst when car is idling. it's really really loud and embarassing. any ideas about what might be causing it to happen? thanks!
 
Possibly it's from a loose exhaust system. A pipe, muffler, or catalytic converter may be banging against some part of your undercarriage. Often this happens when one of the exhaust hangers fails (the rubber piece tears loose). Another cause is from your having driven over a high curb causing the exhaust system to hit and bend out of shape.
