My 95 Dodge Neon (sport) dies when I accelerate hard.?

My car is a 1995 dodge neon sport--auto transmission--, the Issues that are currently presenting is that when I am in drive and in town it run perfectly fine (While in DRIVE) ... if i attempt to "punch it" the car auto shifts to neutral, shuts off, and rolls to a stop. (awesome right!)
Issue #2.
If my car is in 1st gear (gear shift goes park, reverse, neutral, drive, 2nd, 1st) I can only push the throttle down 1/4 of the way before my gearshift snaps forward into neutral --past 2nd and drive-- and then kills and rolls to a stop.
As a wrap-up, car runs fine in town/on highway at high speeds..but when i attempt to "punch it" or start off in first gear it will feel like I'm pressing into a brick wall, which once I pass through, the car stales into neutral and dies. ----Note it will restart once i stop and put in park/back into drive

All thoughts/comments would be Greatly helpful...(ie, is it a throttle cable linkage issue, or a transmission issue? --95 neon's are very "mechanical" rather than computerized heh.)
