my 93 honda accord is over heating?

we put in some coolant not too long ago unless it all evaporated it was on the past the red mark on the H for a good few minutes. when we turned off the car and lifted the hood it was smoking and it kept making a weird noise. the fans turned on tho and the temp gage is replaced cause we thought it was that. any idea what it could be? or how much it would cost. im so afraid how expensive its going to be to fix
