My 8gb 4g Itouch wont turn on or charge. The very low battery logo comes up sometimes when plugged in. HELP?

Ive tried holding the home and on/off button both when plugged in to a computer and not. The ipod will not reset or show any display. As I said, sometimes when I plug the Itouch into my laptop, the very low battery logo will come up for about 5-10seconds and then go away. At one point, the itouch turned on while plugged into a laptop but stopped charging. Once the battery died, I could not get the Itouch to do anything. I've tried numerous cords and computers but still, the Itouch will not be recognized. Im not sure what to do. Please help
