My 1986 Yamaha Fazer FZX700 runs but doesn't have ant power. What could be the problem?
It stalls out when it goes up a hill.
OK this should help
Symptoms:
1. Won't start cold (starter fluid does it)
2. When it does start it runs well but has no power (trouble climbing hills and starting off)
3. I rode it (3 times total) each time it was within operating temperature but would not re-start without starter fluid.

Hi there, your carbs are a lil dirty usually the hi and low jets need a good plunging/spraying with carb cleaner, not the kinda you pour in the tank. Air filter needs to be cleaned or replaced, I use a K&n washable unit that gets cleaned once a year. Even a leaking spark plug cap can cause it to do this. There are also small drain screws on the bottom of each carb which you can loosen as well to drain the carbs of grit and water which settles int he float bowls. I drain them a tad every 3 weeks. It's really an easy fix too and will run like new once you do it. Pulling the tank and upper lid off is a lil bit of a task andbe-carefull not tot lose the springs when you pull off the gas cap assembly. That portion you need to do really slowly to not lose any of the tiny parts. New plugs wouldn't hurt either they are an easy fix as well just gap them correctly. If you have the carbs serviced make sure theydon'tt pull off the needle jet cups, they will always break and finding a 2nd set of carbs is a pain/expensive on ebay. I have 2 fazers for me an for the wife since 1987 and have gone thru everything on both bikes.

I belong to a 86-87 Fazer group here in yahoo and on facebook

if you need help email me anytime these are great bikes and will last forever, not to mention smoke every 600-700cc sport bike on the street ;)

Not enough info on the symptoms to diagnose. It could be a number of things from a bad spark plug to internal motor damage, or a transmission problem. No way to tell without more info.
