My 79 Suzuki GS550L will not idle for more then a few seconds without gassing it!?

I just purchased a motorcycle it ran fine, but needed a new battery, so i put in a new battery then I went to start it and it was idling but little to high, around 3500 rpm so i adjusted the throttle cable, unfortunately my friend tried to help and adjusted it a bit to much. after his adjustments it would still start but wouldn't idle without giving it gas, i tried to re adjust the cable back to its original state, but it didn't have any effect and now iv got a bike that runs great but cant idle, it doesn't matter if the choke is out or not still will not idle, any suggestion on how to fix this problem?
 
You have a idling adjusting screw on the carburetter just turn the screw half a turn in and then try the motorcycle again but only turn the screw half a turn at a time .
