my 5230 is 100% de-branded

Thanx for the link.

The updates would be Ovi maps (latest version) Nokia messaging (does not install properly) Ovi contacts and Here and Now.

My phone still works, not dead. after it says "ERROR: Failed to set phone to flashmode," my phone turns off itself, but I can just turn it on as nothing have happened. The booting screen still says "T-mobile stick together," and the phone is still t-mobile interface. I am so confused. All I want is just get my phone with chinese...

I think Scottish mentioned how to get chinese on the phone.

"You can try your guts to use RM-588 ROM (be warned it's pretty likely to brick your phone), but there's much simpler way to just enable basic display...
Get some Chinese-supported fonts (I used MS JHei and Droid Sans Fallback), rename these fonts to
s60ssb.ttf
s60tsb.ttf
s60snr.ttf

create a folder \resource\Fonts on your memory card, put these fonts there, restart your phone. Once you notice the font changed, you got it. " is what Scottish said on the first or second page of this thread.
I say you have to read english to put chinese on the phone :D

I'll do another step-by-step.. Since there was some guesswork when I did it.

1- Use Google, Search "Navifirm" and click on the first result. At the bottom of the first post on that page, there is a link(no registration required) where you can download it. Save it somewhere easy to access.
2- Use Google again, or your preferred Torrent site. Search "Phoenix Service Software" and download/install it. (2010.12.008.42304 is the version I used)
3- Open navifirm.exe. It will take a moment to load the product list, so be patient
4- Select Nokia 5230 (RM-593)
5- Under Releases, select 12.8.95
6- Under Variants, select RM-593 CTR AWS NA WHITE_WHITE (0595971)
7- Above the list of files, click "All"
8- Click "Download from FiRe" at the bottom right.
9- Navigate to %Program Files%\Nokia\Phoenix\Product and save the files there.
10- Open Phoenix, Go to Tools > Options > Product Location
11- Add C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\ and C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products and click apply(it will prompt you to add locations for DP2.0, just use the default), then click Close
12- Connect your phone VIA USB.
13- Click "File> Scan Product". At the bottom left it will tell you the status. When it is complete, you will see "Operating Mode: Normal" under "Connections".
14- Click "Flashing > Multiflash"
15- Under Dev. 1, select USB1
Under Product, select "CBL..."(not sure if everyone's number after CBL is the same)
Under software, select Product(The name of the folder you put the files in)
Code should be "0595971 RM-593 CT.."
Version 001
Method: Refurbish.
16- Click start. Do not interrupt this operation, so make sure your phone is FULLY charged.

Also, when going to update, be sure to press yes as quickly as possible to allow s/w update to connect to the internet.
Took me two times(got it on the third attempt when I realized what the problem was) to get the list.
Not sure if this is accurate, but it seems that it tries to connect once and if it can't, it will throw the error. If you click to allow it to access the internet quickly, it wont give the error.

Exact list:
Adobe FlashLite 3.1
Here and Now 2.0
Nokia Messaging 10.2
Ovi Contacts 1.50
Ovi Maps 3.4
Ovi Music 11.4
Scribble Powered by Python 0.2
Shazam 2.2

BTW:

Does anyone know how I would go about extracting an application? Thinking about flashing back to tmobile just to get the messaging app if it is possible to extract it... If so, I will upload it for everyone else to use

Wirelessly posted (HTC Touch Pro 2: Opera/9.80 (Windows Mobile; WCE; Opera Mobi/WMD-50433; U; en) Presto/2.4.13 Version/10.00)

Mine is 3.03.
Got an update notification after debranding.

I know that, of course. But not officially. And if there is only a little fault while using this third party flash boxes, your phone is dead. That's because downgrading only works if you manage to destroy some special data area in PM section 308 before.

Ok so I was getting ready to debrand my nuron and was backing up important files and such. For the heck of it I clicked on software update in the app folder. There was a firmware update to 12.2.082. I was curious as to what would be updated.

After the update the only things I noticed was the phone was much more responsive. Especially switching between menus. Next was an update to the OVI store. And finally some of the secondary small sized icons have a more modern look. Other than that everything else is the same. The update didn?t affect any of my personal files or profiles, except I had to resign in to all of my accounts. e.g. mail services, ovi maps and mail.

I guess what I am getting at is the debranding really worth it? Ok so you can tweak the home screen a little different. You can lock 2G or 3G and it displays 3.5G where avail. When you turn on and off the phone, no more tmobile ?stick together? So what! Is this all I am going to gain? Is there going to be any truly performance enhancements. Someone noted being able to install java apps. I am able to do that now. Someone said the GPS gets a quicker lock. Mine locks within 3 seconds

Look at what you?re going to lose. Nokia messenger plus a few others. All the tmobile apps, web2go features. Direct access to you account showing details and service used. Most of witch I use.

Do I want to debrand it just to say I did it? Or is there truly an enhancement.

I'm sure a Nokia service center can do it too...officially. They just don't want the user to mess with the phone too much. The PM section is also writable, so as long as the service software supports it, you should be good. You would also be surprised what some 3rd party service centers can do. Practically, there is no such thing as a dead phone:D

Does anyone know about the 5230 v20.0.005 update as per Nokia Europe:
This software release provides performance improvements, including enhanced touch screen usability for scrolling through menus. This release includes updated versions of several applications, such as Maps 3.0 with Share location feature, Browser, and Ovi Store. There are also improvements to the Nokia Messaging, Ovi sync, and Ovi Music applications. To get this software through your device, type in *#0000# on the home screen or go to Device Manager. Select Options > Check for updates and follow the on-screen prompts. Alternatively, this software release is available through the Nokia Software Updater.
Will this work with an unbranded Nuron and can someone try this out?
Sounds like it would be worth the unbranding to get k. scrolling in the grid menus

In the TM USA firmware I don't see a SIP client, and I think someone said they could not install the Nokia SIP s/w from the OVI store.

It would be good to have the ability to download/use it, and I'd consider that a compelling advantage of a new firmware.

What's the firmware version number on the newest / best unbranded firmware?

Does BT PAN or Serial Port Protocol work on any of these firmwares?

Wish that update was available the other day when I tried.. Anyways, if you actually have use for the built-in IM and other tmo apps, it may not be worth it. Especially with the new update you just got. The thing that made me want to debrand it is because of the slow responsiveness, which apparently has been fixed through that update. There are a few small differences, but I'm not sure if it is worth it for most people.

I hope there is a way to extract the applications from the tmo firmware so I can get the one or two I would use back on my phone.. But they are not important enough for me to go back to stock fw, personally.
