My 4 month old AND I watch baby Einstein. There's one with just shapes and music. He loves it. About once a week I'll pull it out and we sit TOGETHER and I point out everything that it on the screen. The one I have is only like 16 minutes long and he squeals with delight.
Again this is NOT something I do daily but would if it made him happy. I put them on to teach, have him learn and to talk to him. I wouldn't recommend buying it just so you can put him in front of the tv while you get the dishes done.
There's different age related ones with seasons, babies, colors and sounds and all sorts of things. I think this is a much better idea then just regular cartoons as well.
