Hi,
I am a parent of a 34 mth old- I am anxious because my child has no interest in watching TV, and consequently doesn't pick up any alphabets, numbers, educational material from kids TV programs/ songs/ nursery rhymes. She seems to get it when we try and teach her 1:1, but because she has a short attention pane, it is difficult to get her undivided attention long enough each day to be able to "teach" her these skills - am worried that she may have a learning disability - can you share your experiences? Although I know most parents worry about TOO much TV, TV does have limited educational material that kids benefit from.

Girl, these days that's freaky weird.

Cherish it, nurture it, and remember it. There are a million parents who'd love to be in your position.

Some kids just don't like TV. That's fine. In fact... that's GREAT. Good for her. She can spend that time doing something more constructive.

You don't need the TV to pick up the alphabet, numbers, songs, or any other educational things. Invest in books, kids music CDs, etc. You don't use a television to teach your children those things.

Why don't you teach her? She'll probably get more out of it learning from her mom. Talk to her and sing the alphabet with her and count her fingers with her. My mom used to count dry cereal with me. She also sang nursery rhymes to me while she got dinner ready and I sat at the table.

You shouldn't rely on TV to teach your child. For centuries, there was no such thing as TV and parents always managed to teach their children their alphabets, numbers, and colors. Of course she has a short attention span -- all children do -- but work with her in short bursts many times a day, and make a game or song out of it whenever you can to hold her interest. If you are concerned that she may have a developmental delay, bring up your concerns with her doctor at her next appointment.
