ya ya, happy new year and all of that crap. i really wish i could have a do-over, because my 2010 has NOT started out well.

the night started out SUPER fun and we had an amazing time...BUT...

A and I stayed in a hotel last night because it was supposed to be part of a packaged deal with a cheaper hotel room and a free cab ride home (which wasn't free...the cabbie said he didn't know what we were talking about...). I really, REALLYi wish we didn't.

At about 3 or 4 in the morning the fire alarm went off. I was awake, A was sleeping, so I had to wake him up. I put on jeans, shoes (no socks) and a light coat on over my shirt. A? He had shorts, a shirt, and socks. so we went outside. we took the door closest to the stairs because we wanted to get out of there in case there was an actual fire and found ourselves in the very back of the hotel...and were immediately told to "GET DOWN ON THE GROUND AND PUT YOUR HANDS OUT IN FRONT OF YOU!"

what. the. fuck.

we were freaking out because we didn't do ANYTHING. we were down on our hands in knees IN THE SNOW (and i fuckin' hate snow). remember poor A? in his SHORTS AND SOCKS?! ya so i slid A my purse and told him to put his elbows on it or something. I asked the cop, "can i PLEASE give him my jacket? he's wearing shorts and he is FREEZING." The cop responded back "I know it sucks really bad, and I'm sorry, but just hold on a few more minutes." At that time we figured he was going to be cool with us. He brought me over to the car first, HAND CUFFED ME, then brought adam over, cuffed him and put us in the back of the cop car. He questioned us a little bit in there and wrote down some notes. Asked if I had anything illegal in my purse, which I didn't, and after about a half hour to 45 mins we were free to go. They asked if A wanted to see the medic, but he said it was fine. He probably SHOULD HAVE because he has cuts and bruises on his knees. I just hope he doesn't have frostbite.

basically it looked really bad for us to come out the back. to them it could have seemed like we were sneaking. they were gentle and nice and we didn't get arrested or anything, but it was the wrooooooong place at the wroooooooong time. it absolutely SUCKED. welcome to 2010.

no shit! he asked if we had been drinking and we said yes, that we took a cab to the hotel. i told him that we were trying to be safe and not stupid. he said we did the right thing. just love how the right thing got us into a crazy situation lol

Better Jane than me, I would have been FUCKING PISSED. So pissed I probably would have gotten tasered. Then I would have sued the fuck out of them. This is America, you have a right to leave buildings.

well i guess the guys on the outside didn't know that the fire alarm was going off. they just thought we were sneaking out the back. i think they cuffed us for their own safety because they didn't know if we were part of it. the guy was really chill so i'm not screamingly pissed...i feel more tormented by the whole situation

Where the hell was this hotel that you were staying at? Also the reason Jane and A got handcuffed is safety reasons while they were detained and the cops figured out they were just people trying to leave a building with the fuckin fire alarm going off. Hopefully 2010 improves for you :-p

and they didn't know about the fire alarm, therefore they had even more reason to think we were part of it

ya but when the building is surrounded they are kinda watching for people who are sneaking out LOL we came out in the back where there is literally NOTHING. just a hill that leads up to the expressway, so the fact that we came out there is kinda like "huh?"

I truly don't understand why they were so extreme with the two of you. How hard would it have been to escort you to the front of the building and confirm you had reservations?

Was the building indeed on fire?

It's called "suspicious activity", if they have reason to believe that you're up to something suspicious, they can handcuff you and question you. It's the law, and it's not going to change.

Coming out of the back of a hotel like that, especially in the situation they were in, might be quite suspicious to a cop. It'd be extremely stupid to fight them or act in a violent manner, unless you have something to hide.

I probably woulda been trippin balls myself if I was in that situation.

They can question me, and I have a right to refuse their questioning. If they handcuff me, they better have a DAMN Good fucking reason.
