my 2004 pontiac grand prix gt...is loosing power. When I am on the freeway it feels like it's sluggish and when i step on the gas sometimes it doesn't downshift. also every now and then the temp gauge seems to indicate overheating then it drops down...i check coolant and its okay. also the o2 sensor is bad and I haven't done a tuneup on the car...like spark plugs and wires. could all this contribute to the car running sluggish? Oh yeah and I also replaced the mufflers with performance mufflers.

yes .. all of those things could contribute.. sluggish acceleration and failure to downshift could be caused by a clogged catalytic converter..if the cat is clogged it will cause poor performance bad fuel economy and overheating because the exhaust gasses are pressurizing in the exhaust manifolds.. this could also cause more expensive damage in the long run like blown head gaskets... you need to get the car checked out as soon as possible because the 3.8 liter engine never has had the best reputation for head gaskets anyway so if theyre not damaged already you need to get it taken care of quickly ..
