My 2000 Mazda Protege has a slight problem going up hills, what could be causing this?

It has the 1.6Ltr Dohc engine (105 HP I think). When I'm on the highway in 5th gear / 3500rpm's / 70 mph, and I start going up a hill (a normal mountain/hill sized incline) the car starts to slow down. I'll have to down shift to 4th gear and cruise at about 50/55mph at 3000rpm's until I get to the top. I'm the only one and only thing in this car, other wise its completely empty, so theres no extra weight. I know that engines can lose some HP over time. Is this hill problem just common with these cars because of there power to weight?

I'm going to keep this car despite this up hill issue because and i'm not kidding. EPA says this car should get about 34mpg highway, I'm averaging 42-43mpg highway (just setting cruize control, I'm not playing with the clutch, its in gear the entire time and reving at about 3500 rpm's) Pretty crazy.
