My 2000 Honda Accord was trying to shut off on the highway and felt like it

Check the oil level, add if necessary. Check the radiator fluid level, add if necessary. Check the transmission fluid level according to the instructions in the owners manual and add fluid as necessary. It sounds to me like your engine overheated. It got so hot that the residual oil on the engine block burnt off and you smelled it as the fumes permeated into the cabin. The car must of been starved of oil and the crank shaft main bearing got so big and swollen that the engine could no longer turn. So it tried to shut off due to an overheat condition. I am sorry. But your engine will never be the same again. There would be major wear and tear damage and you have just greatly reduced the useful life of your Honda. Sell it if you will.

You may have a leak in your system somewhere causing either motor oil, coolant, or some other type of fluid out and causing the engine to overheat.

was shifting gears.....? and I there was an odd smell and once I got off the highway and was stopped at a light, my car just shut off completely. All lights work so not the battery, any ideas? Please!!!!!

I had a similar problem with my '99 Accord about a month ago. Whether you're on the street or highway, the engine stops running for a fraction of a second and continues on again as if nothing happened. When it did happen, the check engine light also briefly came on and turned off just as fast. Very few times, the engine did stop and would not start right away.

I took my car to a local auto parts shop to retrieve the codes thinking it was misfiring but there were not codes available. After doing trouble shooting of my own like replacing spark plugs, spark plug wires after each failure the problem still continued. After researching on the Internet, some other Honda owners had similar problems that was caused by a faulty ignition switch. I was out of ideas so I bought the $50.00 part and replaced the ignition switch myself and have not had a problem since.

I sent an IM to you.
