My 1998 Buick LeSabre won't start.?

I’ll try to make this brief. I have a fully loaded 1998 Buick LeSabre with a 3.8-liter engine. There are only 54,000 miles on the car.

I was driving yesterday and the engine quit running. It started back up a few minutes later. I drove about eight miles at 60 M.P.H. before I came to a stoplight and had to slow down. The engine died as it idled down but started back up when I put it in neutral as I was rolling. I put it back into gear but it wouldn’t accelerate to much more than 40 M.P.H.

I drove about two more miles to my destination. I noticed the car was running hot when I arrived. I checked the fluids and the radiator was very low on coolant. The oil was full and clean. I let the car cool down before I added water/anti-freeze to the radiator. I checked the oil again to make sure it was full and clean (no water mixed in…thinking I may have blown a head gasket).

The engine cranks good and strong but won’t start. I checked the fuel pressure valve and the engine is getting gas. I pulled 1 spark plug wire off to see if I was getting spark and I was.

Does anyone have a clue as to why it won’t start? Is there something inherent in this year Buick that goes bad? Is there a way to test the coil packs? They seem suspect to me after talking to a couple of people.

Please contact me diretly through my profile if you need more information.

could be a bad EGR valve (could be sticking shut)... if your coolant was good and your temp spiked check your thermostat... 8 dollar part... if your losing power at idle it could be your alternator... many GM vehicles are known to have bad alternators... just a few suggestions..
