My 1996 Honda Accord idles loudly?

I recently purchased a 1996 Honda Accord, with 144k miles for 2300$

The car is fine, it runs well and looks decent, but when I start it up it idles pretty loudly. It isn't an exhaust problem because when I put it in gear, the it becomes much quieter and its never a noisy drive.

So I was wondering... If and when I idle car, perhaps during the summer for the a/c, could I just put the car and drive and simply hold the brake? I found that the car idles much more quietly when its in gear. Does it make any major difference if the car idles in gear or when its parked?

And lastly, the automatic shifter in car has two drive modes- D3 and D4. I've never seen this before, perhaps I'm inexperienced, but which gear do I shift to when I begin my morning drive and is there any major difference between the two?

agree with above check for a vacuum leak first. that should keep you busy for a few hours then come back. but thats probably it. and yes your vehicle will idle down a little when put in gear. the resistance of the torque converter and tranny in neutral will do that. and before someone whines, yes the tranny is in neutral in park just that the parking pawl is engaged only difference.

always run in D4 homie. i've got a 97. the problem with mine is that it idles too damn low. lol...all yours needs is to be idled down, but it's not goin 2 cause anythin but minor annoyance. and then some accords just idle high, what rpm does it idle at?
