my 1977 yamaha dt 250 is running like crap?

i just picked up a 1977 yamaha dt 250. i can get her kicked over no problem, but when shes running the rpms sound like they are fluctuating. its almost a "put, put," misfiring sound at what should be a steady rpm, but it sounds smooth when Im climbing through gears and keep my rpms up.

ive already checked the carb to see if i could find any gew and everything looks clean. ive also checked my tank and while there is some debret, ive cycled new premium gas through it.

anyone got a clue what i should look for?
 
Idle jet partially clogged? Vacuum leak? Several things, up to and including a spark plug. I'd start by adjusting the idle and see what happens.
