It's contagious as long as staph is present, and staph can stay on the skin long after the infection heals. Nearly all people have live staph germs on their skin, and it's nearly impossible to completely get rid of it - it is an extremely common bacteria. Staph is only a problem when it gets under the skin.

To minimize the possibility of contagion, dab the infected area and the area surrounding it with povidone iodine surgical scrub, and then cover the wound with light gauze. Iodine kills resistant bacteria within 30 seconds of exposure.

...is it contagious for?
they have him on bactrim, i wash the wound with surgical soap they gave me. add safe gel, a new dressing as well as wrap it in gauze twice a day. i called off work today because i was affraid i could pass it on. i work in a resturant. the wound is healing nicely now. is getting a scab. he just started the bactrim today.
i just found out last nite. they changed his prescription to bactrin and hes started that today. i clean the wound with surgical soap they gave me, add a new dressing and wrap with new gauze twice a day. its starting to get a scab and looks alot better then it did sun when we first went to ER. i called off work today as i was worried about passing it on since im around him all the time. i work at a resturant. i am waiting on a pamphlet from the drs to tell me more about it. but i am veyr concerned as what this will mean for us.
