It's contagious as long as staph is present, and staph can stay on the skin long after the infection heals. Nearly all people have live staph germs on their skin, and it's nearly impossible to completely get rid of it - it is an extremely common bacteria. Staph is only a problem when it gets under the skin.
To minimize the possibility of contagion, dab the infected area and the area surrounding it with povidone iodine surgical scrub, and then cover the wound with light gauze. Iodine kills resistant bacteria within 30 seconds of exposure.
