must hear albums

In my opinion the vocals are amazing. There not your a-typical cookie monster style vocals, I'd describe them as halfway between a scream and a deep-growl, and there consistently tortured and emotional in tone.

If you do check out the album, make sure you give it half a dozen or so spins before you pass judgement as it takes a while to get your head around. Once you get it though its freaking great.

Another album which deserves special mention is Written in Waters by Ved buens ende.

Some singer/songwriters (think Paul Westerberg and Elliott Smith) develop their world-weariness through the unforgiving trials of passing years and the heart-breaking grind of the music business. Others (Van Morrison, Neil Young) seem to have sprung from out of nowhere with the fully formed soul of a life well-lived. Ray LaMontagne belongs with the latter. On this, his debut, LaMontagne has crafted a handful of quietly devastating meditations on life and love--and delivered them with a raspy vocal all his own. The simple, mournful lyrics of "Burn," "Shelter" and the title track recall a Hank Williams ballad, and the reserved production by alt-country/americana genius Ethan Johns (the Jayhawks, Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon) make this a great disc for smoky Saturday nights, and rainy Sunday mornings. --Ben Heege

i've been listening to Dredg - Catch Without Arms the last few days and it's fucking incredible. very mellow and the guy has a great voice. not the most complex shit, but it's got a great feel to it. also, the snare has a great pop to it. i can't wait to hear the other Dredg cd now

for all the classical music loving people, i picked up this awesome album the other day. It's The Illusionary Movements of Geraldine and Nazu by J Ralph. Absolutely beautiful flowing music with a little bit of a modern edge to some of it. definately an excellent $12 spent.

Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come

Great great album. #2 album on my top 5 greatest albums list. Singing is decent if you can handle screaming but the music is awesome. Especially the drumming. Every song is good.

I have this, I bought it when it first came out, rad CD.

1. Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
It's beautiful. From their first song that changes 3 times till the end from a straight out rock to a melodic cooled rock song to a hectic end to the awesome epic ending of Styrofoam boots, this is the most beautifully produced CD ever.

2. Built To Spill - Live
Built To Spill, known for their live stuff, which is simply incredible (twice i've seen it in person), is put together here. This is essentially their top hits, but even better because it's live which means 2-3 minute jam endings and the most impressive cover I have ever seen. Neil Young/Crazyhorse's Cortez The Killer, with a 15 minute jam ending. Beautiful.

3. Pavement - Bright The Corners
Pavement, known as the first indie rock band to break into mainstream while still on an indie label(matador) (subtle breakthrough, no one played them much, but they made the airwaves anyway). This is to me, the best CD they have made. It has the excellent singing, the intensity of the earlier stuff(slanted and enchanted) and the smooth tunes of Crooked Rain. It is the apex of their career.

4. Ugly Cassanova - Ugly Cassanova
Modest Mouse frontman starts his side project Ugly Cassanova. Inventive and unique.

5. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
So awesome. The end.
