Federal authorities arrested a young Muslim man on Wednesday, for allegedly trying to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The plot, which involved a fake 1,000-pound bomb, was part of an elaborate sting operation run by the FBI and the New York City Police Department. At no time was the building, or any civilians, at risk.
21-year-old Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis came from Bangladesh on a student visa, and was allegedly in contact with Al Queda before coming to America, reports CBS News. He entered the United States in January to attend Southeast Missouri State University, where he was studying cyber security. A State Department visa application system did not find any reason to deny him entry, and the department issued his visa.
In addition to trying to blow up the New York Fed, Nafis allegedly wanted to “attack and kill” a high-ranking government official, reports the New York Times. A senior law enforcement official anonymously told the paper that the target was President Obama, and that the plan never got past the talking stage.
Nafis was charged with conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction and providing material support to Al Qaeda. He could face up to life in prison if convicted.
