There were plans for a Les Mis film in the late 80s/early 90s as I have a LM brochure with an advert for it but nothing ever came of it

I liked rent

Haven't seen a production of it...was it not very close to the original then?

Loved the stage show and the film was highly anticipated by me but even though I bought the DVD, something is missing, it just doesn't feel right and some brilliant songs were cut out which annoyed me.

that's annoying. I just love the songs from Rent apart from the one that Maureen sings....I have to press fast forward when that comes on!

Oh no. The Producers (2005) is probably one of my favourite films ever and I adore RENT (I'm in America at the moment and I'm going to watch it on Broadway tonight - can't wait ), but both films were panned by critics.
