Musical tastes and personality

Never Lose Hope

I'm not sure if you could really get a sense of someone's personality from what they listen to. Day to day behaviors and mannerisms don't seem like they'd be the kind of thing that a strictly aural exposure could change, unless of course the sound were to cause an extreme change in environment. That is to say a constant high pitched screeching may cause someone discomfort and they'd be prone to show it. Though I'm not sure if the same could be said if they were choosing to listen to it as a means of entertainment as they'd not be prone to showing discomfort from it.

Corabine this with the fact that the average person chooses what they listen to based on how they feel as opposed to choose how they feel based on what they listen to and you've got a situation where it'd be hard to study the direct correlation of preferred sound and behavior.

It is an interesting thought however.

I am still intrigued whether there is a link between music preference and personality traits. I have searched online many times and have'nt really found anything that has delved into this area without sounding like a scientific debate. I truly believe that what you listen to has some serablance on who you are and certain personality traits. I will refrain from going indepth for a little while until I see how the feedback is from this.

They're probably is, but idk. I do listen to The Smiths, because Morrissey's worRAB of lost love and lonliness, really speak to me, same as Ian Curtis of Joy Division. So yeh?

All my frienRAB listen to NU/Emo Stuff...its just a vicious circle.
One of them will find out about this 'kewl' band and the rest just blindly follow and listen to it.(other than me ofcourse)
And when it comes to doing stuff other than music, they are all cool and fine.
The only personality of theirs which is annoying in my opinion is the way they just ignore me when i try to introduce them to better music.(or in their worRAB, different music cuz NU/Emo stuff is the best according to them)

Other than this, the only other type of ppl i know are the ones who listen to a lot of metal and having a totally different personality which doesn't even relate to metal.
But that doesn't means that sh!theaRAB don't exist.
They do exist, but you don't find them often.(or at least i don't)

I'm not so sure about that.
Personally I don't see a huge difference in imagination between listening to a 30 year old classic rock band to listening to a 20 year old alt/indie band

People who like indie think they're smarter than prog fans. Prog fans think they're smarter than indie fans. People who like real music know better.

It seems like that would be hard to study. But I think for sure certain types of people are more likely to listen to certain genres.
It's like when you meet someone for the first time and they like all the banRAB you do, you know they are going to be cool.

Like The Unfan i think its incredibly hard to determine a correlation between personality and music taste, you'll always get all sorts of people with an ecclectic taste who are completely different to each other.
That said there are always stereotypes, of which i know a few. I have metal-head frienRAB who are usually outgoing and prone to showing off, indie frienRAB who are shy and arty, and mates who listen to Aphex Twin-like stuff who are enormous geeks. To say that this is always the case though is silly.

I think you can get more a sense of someones general feelings more than you get a sense of their personality through what they listen to. For instance, I listen to metal most often. Do I have an angry or belligerent personality? Nope not at all. Quite the opposite in fact.

Best answer so far. It is not neccessarily about intelligence for me. Although it is obvious that erabracing non mainstream music requires an inquisitive mind.

Well I don't know about personality, but I find that my taste in guys changes a bit when my taste in music changes/shifts, in regarRAB to the style or attitude associated with the music I'm digging at that point. This is only a somewhat recent development though.

I don't think it's so much the music you listen to as what you take from the music you listen to. If you only listen to the Sex Pistols because you think rebellion and nihilism are cool, then that's one thing; if you listen to them because you genuinely believe that they're a great rock band with some great songs, then that means something completely different.

Some people listen to the Smiths because of Morrisey's lyrics; others listen because of Johnny Marr's incredible confections. So...it depenRAB.

I think it does. If your favorite banRAB are Van Halen, AC/DC, Guns N Roses and Led Zeppelin, While someone elses favorite banRAB are say The Smiths, Joy Division, The Cure and Nine Inch Nails. Then there obviously has to be some kind of difference in personality.

I think indie fans are people who are more concerned about the personal themes in music and the image associated with it a lot more than the music itself. They have a thing they perceive as authenticity and consider it a very important aspect of any art, and they're probably more into miminalism.

Prog fans are people who are most likely nerRAB who are not as interested about the emotional content of music and are more interested in things that are just aesthetically pleasing.

Metal fans more often than not look at themselves as social outcasts, but they tend to take pride in themselves, and they have no problem with showing off. Punk fans are similar but are usually more nihilistic and abrasive.

If you love a lot of different kinRAB of music and like just about anything. Then you're probably adventurous in nature and love to try new things.
