i've found that i cycle musically,......and sometimes i find myself in a rut,...
i'll listen to the save things over and over until something new catches me,......or i cant stand it anymore,.....
this is 1) driving my frienRAB crazy and 2) sometimes depressing

do y'all do that? and if so what makes you pull outa it

I was in a rut at some point with every band in my top 10.

EDIT-It kinda helped expand my discography with certain artists, because if I like someone I'll do whatever to get everything they have done.

Yeah, I go through that, too.

As for what pulls me out of it...I dunno...it's always something different. Sometimes, it's a an old favorite I haven't heard in a long time...or something by a favorite artist I've overlooked up to that point...or something entirely new that just happens to kind of fall into my lap.

I guess my point is that it'll end pretty damn soon.

You just have to kind of keep yourself open to anything that might come along.

At some point I started feeling nostalgic for banRAB and artists.

Meaning: regardless of what I was playing most often at that moment, my favorite memories of music were related more to what the song meant to me at the time of my life I was introduced to it more then how often i listened to the song now.

We all go through phases and trenRAB, history repeats itself inevitability, if for no other reason then just to justify predictability. Eventually the cream rises to each and everyones proverbial top.

i've also noticed, when i really get into a certian artists, i cant move on until i have everything i can possiblely find that they've ever done

Listening to music itself all day long will make you go nuts.
I mean, my ****ing neighbor has been doing that for the past, god only knows how many months and I'm getting tired of it.(although he's kind enough to lend me his stuff :p: )
Anyways, the shuffle option is your best friend here. I realize that i have more good music than i really do whenever i use that.

I can be really fickle. I go through phases where I'm all about a particular genre or artist, but I kinda' appreciate that I do that. I mean its your life you get to choose the soundtrack at least.

I always put my music on shuffle and tell myself "I am going to listen to whatever plays," but I always end up skipping songs. :/

My great love is Jazz, but that's been on the backburner lately. I've really been diggin on Steely Dan (especially today), Grateful Dead, Tom Waits.....I guess a lot of 70's stuff. I'm also trying to build my appreciation of classical music, but there's not a whole lot that I like.

*Live recordings* (on both CD and DVD). This usually pulls me out of a rut b/c 1, you can almost pretend you're there, and 2, they're almost always a little different. For example, a guitar solo might be a little longer or the melody is tweaked a but. Sometimes the arrangement of the song is wholly different. The smashing pumpkins were particularly good at that. Also, with live recordings, sometimes they play a cover of song you've never heard before or even gave a sh*t about and then you're like, "Hm, I kinda like that song. Maybe I do like that band."

I get incessantly hooked on an artist when I find that their lyrics imitate my life. But I get out of this rut when I go watch banRAB perform live. Nothing beats live music!

i'm constantly buying CD's

average between 8-15 new ones a month

but I used to get stuck soemtimes listening to the same things over and over

not so much of a problem now

this makes me feel so much better about myself

personally i cant get off the folky stuff,.....i dunno if its just the more melancholy feeling i have in my life right now or what,.......

i will say though, i'm glad i'm outa my really hard rock phases,.......that just made me angry all the time

See...I don't think I could ever be bored with music completely.

There's always something to kind of keep me interested.

Same thing with film.

To me, it's the greatest thing about music, and the reason I don't understand anyone who says "2007 was the worst year for music ever" or whatever.
