Musical Advances: ATDI vs Mars Volta

Today I got into a heated discussion with my friend over which band has contributed more musically to their respective genres and their overall influence. I was siding with ATDI and my friend for Mars Volta (obviously). So I wondering what everyone else thought.

The Mars Volta may have inspired to people to start playing prog, but ATDI have actually shaped the genre of (post)hardcore. So it's ATDI for me.

I prefer his vocals in Mars Volta over Drive-In. Post-Hardcore or whatever you wanna call it isn't normally my cup-a-tea. With Mars Volta it was the progressive side of things that initially won me over with Cassandra Gemini

I'm inclined to say the same thing, except that ATDI helped shape post-hardcore. Just a technicality. But I agree that TMV may have brought progressive rock to the masses in this decade but were otherwise not doing anything that hadn't been done before.

However, as I said post-hardcore was well on its way already, I'm not sure that ATDI influenced anything that wouldn't have happened without them. I might be wrong of course. But TMV, while doing something that had been done several decades before already, built on their established reputation and influenced a new wave of progressive rock. Now it might have just been a case of right place right time (like Nirvana), because there were other modern prog banRAB around. But they had the ability to appeal to the punk/hardcore scene as well as the mainstream crowd.

All that said, I'm still undecided.

ATDI did more for one specific genre, but that genre is spewing out a lot of crap at the moment. TMV is an overall better, and more important band.

Exactly. I felt like ATDI helped to progress the whole post-hardcore bull**** that is mostly garbage anyway. If you ask me, Mars Volta led the way towarRAB carving out a better niche in the genre, though most didn't follow.

So once again which, contributed more? Not your opinion of the music they play/played.

Sparta FTW! Joking, but Alfred, Im with you for sure. ATDI, I feel did much more overall for the rock genre.

Who you feel contributed more is still a matter of opinion. As I explained, I feel ATDI contributed more to the post-hardcore genre in general, but Mars Volta adapted it into a more specialized sub-genre; but they weren't followed heavily.
