Music Theory question: Trying to compose a swing piece, any advice?

I've decided to try my hand at composing a swing piece, so far trying to make it fast and upbeat. I have a couple melodies bouncing around in my head, but I'd like to know which would be better. I've mostly arranged things in the past, listening to recordings and such, and I've dabbled with some folk music (yes, you read correctly) arrangements, and I don't know the first thing about composing swing music, except that it's usually written in 4/4

So, is there any advice you could give me in general, maybe things which are typical in swing music? Or anything else you can think of.
