i would like to know if it is possible to copy/pull music files from my sd card which is in my palm, and put them on my desktop. Basically can i transfer music from one computer to my palm then dump them off at another computer.

would this be a program or some type of hardware? if a program were could i get it. p.s. thanks for helpin me out, this was killin me.

As PTL pointed out:

1. Cardreader is a piece of hardware that allows you to use the SD card without the Hotsync manager. This type of hardware can be had at compusa for about $19.95 and will allow you SD card to be viewed as another drive by Windows Explorer. 1GB card loaded with music using this method the transfer would be minutes.
2. CardExport can also be used which is a software program that does the same thing sorta without the additional hardware but via the HotSync. A 1GB SD Card loaded with music via this method would probably be in excess of 45 minutes depending upon your device and the quality of the card.

A couple of other things to worry about. As long as it's formatted in MP3 and is not encoded via some security - in other words you paid for the music or copied it from a CD and didn't download it to play on the device like a registered MP3 player (Ipod) - then that's about it.

If you are using encoded music - then your going to have to have a liscense on both computers in order to listen to it on both.

CardExport II - look at the usual sites: www.palmgear.com or www.handango.com

Ok, let me be clear on something, I disagree. You can spend tons of money on high end cards as pointed out by jcrick but even so - your sync speed may still not be fast enough to handle music. Hotsync speed to an SD card is determined by several factors:

1. ARM Processor speed. A T3 will sync faster than a TX given the exact same card because the T3 has the fastest processor and all of the data still goes through it. This is more critical then #2.
2. Card Speed - and this is a two way street. Some cards write faster than read although most read faster than write. And this is extremely variable.

A card reader will always be faster than a hotysnc - so if time is of the essence then spend the $20 bucks for a card reader - especially if you are going to plan on transferring music more than once to a card. Besides, then you can read other devices etc.

Also, you can use a card reader to transfer other files regardless of format or type which can still be done with CardExport but at a sacrafice of speed.

I actually use a Card Reader now as a backup for my Microsoft Money file on the PC - it's either that or write the backup to a cd everytime.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offer this as a practical replacement for a card reader, you can get them for as little as $10. But look more closely, this is both a SD/MCC and USB in one. As taken from the ad directly:

"This ground-breaking card gives you the capability to connect your SD card directly into a USB port by transforming into a USB adapter, via our unique hinged cover, eliminating the need for any readers to offload content to a PC."

Certainly, I have better things to spend money on. But if you don't want to lug a card reader around this is a handy device, albiet too expensive for me. But it does offer the ability to download music/video to the card via a USB adapter, not a HotSync.

But I do agree with you Moose Man, if I were spending $150, I would rather spend that money on a USB card reader and two 1GB SD cards. And I would still have enough left over to take my lady to O'Charlies for a plate of hot wings and a couple of beers.

Cheers,
John
