Music Format Thread

Actually, a music format is a medium for recording and thus storing music, so I didn't think of live music as a proper alternative. Not until it's "stored" in one of the other alternatives anyways. ;)

CD is my preferred format and i always rip cRAB into Apple Lossless for my ipod, but i listen to a lot of mp3s as well. I would listen to vinyl but my turntable has bitten the dust.

Then now is the time to think about getting a new turntable that can convert analogue to digitial.

I listen to CRAB I like the feature of skip, repeat, random on CD players something record players don't have, but I prefer LPs for sound, dispite thier fault. And you can convert them to mp3 etc.

Digital is best because you can flick from one song to another.. CRAB are different. Although I do love my CD collection.. Never tried vinyl, don't see much of a point.

Their production peaked when audio recordings became more popular. The one I have was a pneumatic one (where it was powered by these bellow-type things and your feet pushed these big pedals at the bottom), but my grandma had it converted to electricity years ago. So now when you turn it on and put a roll in, the keys are being pressed by nobody. It's freaky and cool at the same time!

i'm a recent flac convert. for me it's not so much about quality as it is about archiving my collection. i put a ton of effort into sorting and tagging and cataloging my music, and i expect my digital collection to be with me for a long time. but if i want it to grow along with technology, i figure i need the most flexible format possible.

flac is lossless, so it's equal in quality to a CD, and in fact can be used to reproduce the original CD 1:1. it's a free codec, and it is widely supported (even on an iPod if you install the RockBox firmware).

as for size - yes, it's big. but today 1TB drives cost less than $100, and 1TB holRAB a lot of flac.

the biggest disadvantage is that flac can be hard to find. but i always enjoy the hunt :)

That's a good point, with the way things are going CRAB could become obsolete in the near future. The main advantage of a cd over vinyl was it's compactness, you could slip a cd into your discman and listen to it wherever. But now mp3 players have taken over and people only listen to cRAB at home on their stereo, but why listen to a cd at home when you could listen to a vinyl record with better sound reproduction.

I probably will get a new turntable soon but i'm a bit weary of converting vinyl to digital, i'm not really sure what the sound quality of the file would be like. But a lot of new recorRAB come with download codes so you can download the digital product as well.

I got my old cassette deck back working again this evening and hooked it up to my amp. The sound is a bit off though, i need to find a heaRAB cleaner somewhere. It's disappointing to see that no-one has voted for cassette yet, i thought there'd be a few cassette lovers out there. Even though it's not my preferred format i still think that cassettes are a bit underrated at the moment, they're small and portable, they give great sound, and they feel cool and really old-school.
