Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band

So, I've decided to go ahead and nominate Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band for a richly deserved place in the rab Hall Of Fame. Maybe another fairly safe choice, but it's one that I'm surprised has been overlooked 'til now. Basically, Beefheart's discography is, for me, a bottomless treasure trove of avante-garde delights which it took me a while to truly appreciate (I'd owned Trout Mask Replica on CD for about 3 or 4 years before it finally clicked with me). What at first seemed to me like 28 tracks of people yelling, thumping and twanging things eventually turned into one of the most beautiful and blissful albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to.

From his beginnings as a rarabling, psychotic bluesman to the end of his recording career as someone whose videos were 'too weird' for MTV, Beefheart's been responsible for some of the most important and influential music of the past 40-50 years. Good old John Peel does a nice job of summing my feelings on the matter;

"If there has ever been such a thing as a genius in the history of popular music, it's Beefheart

i used to think the beach boys were so cheesey.

in university, i took at 60's music/pop culture class that consisted of three chapters - dylan, the beatles, and the beach boys.

i learned SO much about brian wilson, and mike love, and the whole dynamic of the BB's. they are fascinating.

yes, my answer is yes, put them up there. without the BB's, dylan or the beatles, where would music be today?

I'm going to have to vote No, I like VU, but they are not in my HOF. I'm in no way taking anything from their influence on the music world, but I simply don't like them enough to put them in the HOF.

Ha! I like it - name change perhaps? :D

Eloquently put as per norm as well m'lad, to which I'd add this. I see whether I've heard of an artist up for nomination as irrelevant - if a meraber feels strongly enough about whoever he or she is nominating, gives me the feeling that, unless I'm dead sure I wouldn't want them anywhere near the Hall Of Fame here, they're worth a garable y'know, and by garable I of course mean listening to a related album or two. I hadn't heard much of the Monks at all and certainly had no idea who Big Black were when they were nominated but still voted yes based on giving their albums a listen at the time. This being a Hall Of Fame representing a forum that covers all genres, getting a surprise here and there should be part of parcel of at least the nomination round.

I won't whine though - people are gonna vote however they want, and I'm cool with that.

Skilled musicians I can agree with but almost all banRAB have skilled musicians. Have a lot to offer beyong their music? C'mon. Like what?

Lots of offense intended here, Fuck you too.

Nothing to do with me being in a bubble, go back to Nirvana nomination and watch all the Brits knocking them for being irrelvent across the pond. My favorite banRAB are the Who and Zeppelin, I'm not in a bubble.
