Music Banter Hall Of Fame: Nominations Thread

I think one of the things that makes him so special is that, even though he is hugely influential, nobody who came after him has really ever been able to replicate his style. It's pretty impressive when you think about it because so often the thunder of the highly influential is often muted over the years by the simple fact that their formerly innovative sound becomes commonplace.

That said, naturally I vote yes for Jimi.

This is all I meant by voting "No". BanRAB like the beatles are obviously going to get in automatically, and after a few months the "hall of fame" will be filled with your standard "rolling stone top 50 banRAB ever" baby boomer blowing trash. Yeah, The Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc should all be in. But after month 6 of the 30th lanRABlide vote welcoming in another obvious 60's group that is in every single 'best of' list ever, everyone will tire of the process and the more underrated/unknown groups (at least more so than the Beatles) won't even had the effort put in to vote them in.

Well I wouldn't say they are way more important than them, I'd say KC are slightly more important than Yes, because they were considered the original leaders of the movement. But from say 71 to 73 Yes were the most popular of the prog banRAB, and they were largely responsable for pushing prog into the mainstream, though Jethro Tull were quite big too, they gained mainstream success a good while before Genesis, ELP and Rush ever did, and Floyd weren't super popular yet, and for a while Yes were even more popular than them. For the record I would also like to see Genesis and KC here too, and obviously Pink Floyd deserve to be in. I think those 4 should at least be the prog representitives in the hall of fame.

"In The Court of the Crimson King" is SO ****ING GOOD.

One of the VERY few prog banRAB out there that don't bore me, and unlike alot of prog banRAB the lyrics aren't distractingly awful. ANd that entire first album is amazing.

No you're comparing them to your ideals for a hall of fame band and for me one of those ideals is some sort of longevity. They lack that and to may that's the major factor causing me to reserve judgment on them for this thread. If I loved both albums it would be a no brainier, but really I am sort of impartial to them. My vote will be based on their complete resume not my personal taste.

Best example i can give, i like Blues Traveler better then Joy Division but would never nominate or vote in favor of Blues Traveler for the hall of fame.

I agree, especially Public Enemy. Public Enemy was the perfect corabination of talent and pioneering.

Though, I do love Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash. I like NWA, though the rhetoric isn't always great. But their talent was undeniable.

As for the earlier comment that Wu-Tang Clan was essentially hip-hop's first "supergroup," I think NWA was hip-hop's first supergroup.

I've never actually heard Aeroplane, so I'm not going to vote.

On Avery Island was pretty good, but Aeroplane would have to be a huge step up to warrant a hall of fame inclusion.

Wow it seems like I'm reading the 'Unpopular Music Opinions' thread. Interesting.
I actually really like some of their music, particularly If You're Feeling Sinister and their first 3 EPs (Lazy Line Painter jane).
After that.. I dunno. I don't like it enough to nominate them and I was fairly horrified to see them described as 'Twee' in the writeup.

Anyway, Janszoon, I think this this is the first time that I've distinctly disagreed with you on music. Would you mind telling me how B&S represent everything that can be awful about indie pop? I don't begrudge your opinion - just curious

I don't smoke anything, drink pretty lightly, and I personally enjoy, love and find a great deal of personal engagement with all of Tools music and the atmospheres they create. So, yeah, you may find them great to get stoned to, but it isn't a prerequisite to getting into their music and being involved in it.

I had a similar but opposite experience. Eddie was fascinating and scary when I was a kid and when I heard the band they were 'mild' enough for me to enjoy (I have no idea what I was expecting) so I got the double benefit of hearing a band I liked and getting to sport Eddie gear which scared other people who weren't in the know. Ive got to admit that I may owe my love of Iron Maiden to whichever artist painted the cover of 'Killers'
