Music Banter Hall of Fame: Induction Thread 4

Capt. Beefheart
Him and his Magic Band created some of the strangest, funnest, most fascinating and enjoyable music I've ever heard.
Yes

Nick Cave
N/V

Nirvana
Powerful, emotional, all around excellent straight-forward rock music goodness. Maybe they didn't break out into 20 minute free form jazz solos, but that's kinda the point. Brings to mind images of the decades of punk rock, hard rock and all 'round rock star images, attitudes and lifestyles into one incredibly powerful package.

What gets kiRAB into the Pixies, Jesus Lizard, Dead Kennedys, etc. Far too important to pass up.
Yes

Blur
As good as they were at what they did, what they did wasn't very good.
No

Neil Young
Abstain just because I haven't listened to him in years, and honestly can't remeraber much.
N/V

My Bloody Valentine
Never heard an album in it's entirety.
N/V

John Zorn
Simply the best jazz music I've ever heard. Challenging, dissoant, enchantingly beautiful.
Yes

Capt. Beefheart - Yes, because they managed to experiment and truly push pop boundaries while still making enjoyable music.

Nick Cave - No. I'm a fan of his, but he's not so exceptional as to be in a Hall of Fame. Great lyrics and a cool voice, though.

Nirvana - Yes, because they made great music and introduced a lot of people, of a certain generation, to alternative music.

Blur - No. They followed a pretty standard formula and made uninspired and boring music.

Neil Young - Yes, as he really introduced crunchy guitars to the pop canon and influenced countless artists.

My Bloody Valentine - Yes. They weren't the first to make noise pop, as they were following on from Jesus & Mary Chain, but they still pushed the boundaries by submerging their hooks in layers and layers of feedback and effects. While that sounRAB pretty bad on paper, in execution it made incredibly compelling music and spawned countless imitators....to the betterment of pop music.

John Zorn - Abstain, I know nothing about him.

Capt. Beefheart - I only have two of his recorRAB and whereas I may not be as into him as some here seem to be they are good enough for me to vote yes. I have an interest to hear more. Yes.

Nick Cave - Kind of similar to Beefheart in this response, but what I have heard I very much like. Yes.

Nirvana - I was listening to some Nirvana yesterday, before that it had been a long, long time. However regardless of how often I listen to them now I cant forget how key a band they were for me when I was starting to broaden my horizons a little beyond indie music. Most definitely deserving of a yes.

Blur - Yes. Blur had a knack for writing very infectious pop music and they did it very well. Didnt hurt that they were able to branch out beyond this at times too.

Neil Young - When i'm in the mood Neil Young is outstanding. I haven't even really scratched the surface with his back catalogue but what i've heard I love. Yes.

My Bloody Valentine - I simply don't know enough i'm afraid. I know how badly some people big them up and no doubt I will get around to checking some of their stuff out eventually but for now no comment.

John Zorn - Sorry, hadn't heard of the guy until a couple of weeks ago. No comment.

It's a kind of quality guarantee, might as well treat them all the same rather than deciding what is too close or not. You can also revise your decision on them if neeRAB be.

Capt. Beefheart
Yes, one of the finest examples of avantgarde music we have.
Nick Cave
Abstain, while i definitely like what i have by him i still don't feel i have enough.
Nirvana
Yes, one of the crucial banRAB of mine growing up.
Blur
No, good but not quite good or consistent enough.
Neil Young
Abstain, same as Nick Cave.
My Bloody Valentine
Yes, heavy yet still brilliantly majestic.
John Zorn
Abstain, not anywhere near knowing enough.

Capt. Beefheart Yes because he's well liked here and I'm sure I could at least appreciate what he does.

Nick Cave Yes because he's well liked here.

Nirvana Yes because like it or not, they have an important spot in music history blah blah blah etc.

Blur Yes because they made decent music and they're well liked yada yada.

Neil Young Yes because I kinda wanna show some Canadian love he's well liked yada yada.

My Bloody Valentine Yes because Loveless is a fantastic, original album.

John Zorn Yeah, because I heard one Naked City song and it was cool and I'm sure I could appreciate his music. Y'all seem to dig him...

Capt. Beefheart- Never heard his music N/V

Nick Cave- No, not a fan.

Nirvana- Yes, They helped popularize a genre and made some good music along the way.

Blur- Yes, best British band of the 90's

Neil Young- No, doesn't hold my interest

My Bloody Valentine- Yes, They had a good album and a masterpiece and they created a genre, so they've done some good in the music world.

John Zorn- N/V Who?

Capt. Beefheart - N/A

Nick Cave - N/A

Nirvana - No, as their music bores more me and I don't think they contributed very much in moving the alternative scene in a very creative direction.

Blur - Yes, my favourite band of the 90s.

Neil Young - N/A (I have listened to a few of his albums, but I don't think I know enough to decide)

My Bloody Valentine - Yes, excellent, innovative music. Plus they are superb live.

John Zorn - N/A

A fairly small batch this time round, the next inductees are......

Captain Beefheart

My Bloody Valentine

John Zorn

Normal nominations will start up again next week, in the meanwhile feel free to muse as much as you want in here..

Quite so, but that was also from their worst album by a distance. It does no good to change your sound if the music doesn't end up sounding good (to the listener...me, in this case).

Their first four or five albums all pretty much bleed together for me (with a few exceptions: "Pop Scene," "Yuko & Hiro," and "Song 2" all stand out to me as interesting and excellent songs). Their final couple of albums began to depart from that sound but also had worse songs, IMO.

Capt. Beefheart - Interesting, and occasional listen but never really gotten into him enough to say yes. No

Nick Cave - Greatest everything of all time - Yes

Nirvana - No, just never been a fan.

Blur - No, not a fan.

Neil Young - No, meh rock that doesn't interest me.

My Bloody Valentine - Abstain.

John Zorn - No... I know I should say yes given his projects, but again his leader/solo stuff has never captivated me.

Capt. Beefheart
Yes. ****ing hell yes.

Nick Cave
No. Makes me wish for death.

Nirvana
Yes. Makes me wish for death.

Blur
Coffee+TV does not a hall of fame make. No

Neil Young
Yes. No explaination needed.

My Bloody Valentine
Abstain

John Zorn
Abstain

Capt. Beefheart - Yes. A wonderful avant garde musician.

Nick Cave - No. I thought he was alright, but his music never awed me. Not hall of fame quality for me.

Nirvana - Yes. Probably largely responsible for a lot of the music I like, and I loved them for a while. Maybe not the most complicated music but it was good.

Blur No. They aren't a bad band, but I don't like britpop or whatever that much, and I don't think they are near good enough to be a hall of fame band.

Neil Young - Abstain. I've never been a huge fan, but I'm not sure how I can like music and vote against Neil Young getting into a hall of fame.

My Bloody Valentine - Yes. My favorite artist from this list. Loveless is, of course, a shoegaze classic; I love music with layers of distorted guitar sound and they are one of the best.

John Zorn Never heard much by him.

Capt. Beefheart
N/V because I'm not familiar enough with him.

Nick Cave
No. If anyone knows me they'll know I'm all for supporting Australian music, but I've never really been a fan of Nick Cave and haven't understood the hype surrounding his music.

Nirvana
Yes, because I believe they are important/influential body in rock music. I was always quite a fan.

Blur
I'm not going to vote because I'm really on the fence about Blur.

Neil Young
Yes, because I saw him live this year and it was amazing.

My Bloody Valentine
N/V, abstaining because I don't know enough about them.

John Zorn
Yes, an amazing musician both in technical terms and aesthetic terms.
