Husband hurt his back shoveling snow and has terrible back pains. Went to a chiropractor today and he was diagnosed with back spasms. Can anybody give some ideas as to how to treat this. Doctor says no heat or ice. Just back rubs. Thanks for any ideas

Hmm, was it the chiropractor who said no ice or heat, or a medical doctor.

For me, heat is my best friend. That helps back spasms more than anything else. I would have hubby go to a medical doctor who can prescribe a muscle relaxant if necessary. And ask if heat is okay to use for this. I think so, as it's helped me in the past.

I don't want to slam chiropractors too badly here, but you have to keep in mind that they didn't go to medical school. A good chiropractor has a time and place but should never replace a medical doctor.

I hope he gets relief quickly. And I'm glad I don't live in snow country anymore! ;)

Blessings,
Emily

Depending on what caused the spasms. Some will recommend ice for the first 72 hours. If it is degenerative disks, then it would be different. Best thing would be to get an MRI and a doctor's note for Physical therapy and eventually on a good back exercise and total body plan.

hi....

heat has helped my back tremendously! My PT used heat on my neck when I was going to PT years ago.

Good luck and feel better soon!

I also wanted to add that heat or soaking in a hot bath helps my muscle spasms a lot! I also use a muscle relaxer every night a couple of hours before bed.
An MRI may be helpful in diagnosing the problem. Chiropractors have their place, but I wouldn't trust any chiropractor to do treatment with out knowing what the problem is.
I went to a chiropractor at first. I was told I had a strained muscle and she did some stuff to my back. As it turns out, I have a spinal fracture, one of my vertebrae is slipping forward, and I have 2 problem discs. (I found this out after referring myself to an orthopedic doctor). I am getting ready for surgery. The chiropractor could have done a lot of harm to me. You live and learn I guess.
