Murder by death

I've just ordered this film online in a sale. It caught my eye and vaguely remember it was very funny when I watched it years ago. It stars Peter Falk - anyone seen it?

I do remember it from about 16 or 17 years ago on TV. Thought it was funny at the time, just the right balance of verbal and silly humour, kind of like a cross between Neil Simon and earl(ier) Mel Brooks. I think the team responsible tried the same kind of thing with Falk a couple of years later in The Cheap Detective, which just fell rather flat.

Wonderful movie without a single bad performance (not even from Truman Capote). Maggie Smith and David Niven are particularly stylish as Dick & Dora Charleston, a perfect take-off of William Powell & Myrna Loy as Nick & Nora Charles from the Thin Man movies. Also notable is Estelle Winwood as the former Nurse/Nanny of Jessica Marbles (Elsa (Bride of Frankenstein) Lanchester). Born in 1882, she was 94 at the time and clearly still as sharp as a tack, delivering my favourite line perfectly. She and Marbles are in bed and without them knowing, poison gas is being pumped into the room. "What's that smell?" Marbles exclaims. With immaculate timing the Nurse replies "It's not my fault. I'm old!"
