Multiple contacts.

Hi all.
A mate of mine has a Samsung Galaxy Portal GT-I5700 on 3 & his android version is 2.1
When he goes to create a message & he selects a recipient, there are loads of repeated contacts with the same information.
Can anybody shed some light on this?

I have a HTC desire on Android 2.2 & I get this on some of my contacts as well.

I found I had the same condition on a few of my contacts. If I clicked on the link button & unlinked them, I was then able to delete the copies.
I cannot see a link button on the Samsung.
Anybody?
