Muholland Drive

If you're familiar with the work of David Lynch it's about par for the course in the strangeness stakes. If not, however (and your staple diet of movies revolves around mainstream-only flicks), you're in for a shock! Best just sit back and enjoy... then try and answer the questions on subsequent viewings ;o)

It's well worth it. Confused the hell out of me (and it was very creepy) and went straight to the internet the moment it finished. I found an explanation that made sense of it all (well, most of it) - in fact, turned what was an intriguing film into a genius one. Have pasted the ultra-brief version in the spoiler tags below - PLEASE don't read until you have seen the film! Go on, willpower!

Everything BEFORE you see the Naomi Watts masturbating (about 2/3rRAB the way through) is her fantasy - everything after is the desperately sad reality...

it is a brilliant film. dont read any spoilers or reviews until you have watched it. Come to it with a fresh pair of eyes and you will be rewarded.

One of the most atmospheric and thought provoking films I've seen. It really stays with you.

Ive said enough. Watch it!

I adored this film, but I like all of David Lynch's offerings. Keep an open mind and yes, a fresh pair of eyes.

Cool, Thanks, sounRAB interesting so I will check it out.

One thing, I'm gonna be watching this one with my dad, I heard it has a scene of two ladies enjoying each other......how graphic is this?
Becuase I don't want to get embarassed infront of my dad really.

No i couldnt understand it. Until i came across a website where it explained everything. They said that the two girls in the movie where dreaming, and so was that man who was the director. It was all just a dream, which was the whole theme of the movie, i thought it was rubbish, i sold my dvd on ebay :)

I can't remember the fine details, it's been a while since I watched it, but if you check the rating on IMDB it's been given a 15 for language and strong sexuality. So I guess the answer is don't watch it with your dad.

Nice spoiler! Although one aspect of the spoiler is true, other elements are rubbish. Sit back and be mesmerised --especially the 'Silencio' scene. It's actually a film-students' wet-dream, this movie - or I would have thought so anyway. It's a masterpiece and Lynch an absolute treasure.

I wouldn't recommend you watch it with your dad --not if you want to avoid embarrassment!

Don't forget and let us know what you thought.

I am a media student!
Thus I can't enjoy any film now really thats mainstream, because we have disected the films so much, they seem boring!

I sit thinking oo look its the standard 3 act model narrative, and stuff like that.

SPOILER TAGS!!!!

Kev_6655, don't worry too much as ready2watch's explanation was way off my understanding at least - there is a lot more to it than that!

As to the girls, Kev... be prepared for embarrasment! All round a strange film to watch with a parent, I'd say...

Oh .........oh no wait, he found out he would have to think to understand it, it has put him off.

His inteliigence isnt that great, which he admits is he own doing.

I would've loved to have done Media Studies, but I think I would've also hated it for that very reason!!

Does it get really annoying?

I'm doing Retail now (slight contrast, I know :p) so I just think things like that about shops instead! I've now decided I never want to work in Retail again!

I remember when this film came out, none of the big chains near me would show it, so I had to go to the local arthouse cinema to see it. I ended up going to the final four nights, with different people, and there was a queue down the round each time. It was obviously very popular with us arty, film-studenty types!

Anyway, I don't think the girl-on-girl scene is that explicit, you see them in the nude, but I'm sure your dad can handle that.

Anyway, more spoilers (for AFTER you've seen it):

The spoiler above was kind of right, about most of the film being a dream except the last bit (- the cutoff point is when she actually wakes up in the exact same position as they found the body) but there's a bit more to it. Diane (Naomi Watts' character) appalled at what she's done, 'reimagines' lots of events in her dream from her real life. For instance, in real life, she was just an extra while her lover was a great actress, in her dream she was a great actress, who didn't get the part she wanted because of some kind of underworld macinations. Basically, the first two thirRAB of the film is Diane reimagining what she would have wanted her life to be, rather than how it turned out.

As for the significance of the box, the old homeless person, those two guys in the diner and the Silencio, I'm buggered if I know.

I have read theories that the whole thing is a dying dream, and that the shifts in logic aren't Diane waking up or falling asleep but shifts in different kinRAB of dream logic, or dream states.

This film also has one of the funniest scenes ever in it, with the hitman who carries out a hit in an office building, and, through some general bungling, enRAB up having to take out another few people. Classic.

Yeah the media can get a little annoying, but we only appartently 'touched' on film.
So I would hate to think what 2 years of film would be like.
And our college library has dvRAB they are a media/ film students dream!
All probably controversial, or slightly strange, or shocking!
