Hi Guys,

I'm reasonably new to MTG, and am in danger of going silly and spending a fortune when I'd not play it enough to warrant that.

Are there any tips on creating a good deck without spending a fortune; are certain editions/sets better than others, and what types of decks are good ones to go for? I like the more tactical (i.e. thoughtful) decks, but am not too fussy.

If you could give any hints, or ways to find them, on the different sort of decks to try to aim for, that would also be appreciated (some sites out there are a little overwhelming).

Thanks, Guys!

A good deck should include 10 of each mana if your playing two colored deck the same with three but only 5 if you start playing 4 and 5 colored decks
now since your new im saying your starting with 1 colored decks so put about 15-20 mana of your chosen color
i prefer green decks there simply but powerful if you know how to play them correctly.
you should actually limit the number of creatures you have to about 30 id say cant really give a exact number its based on your mana.
sorceries should be limited wouldnt have no more then 15 max i only use 10 instants are really good and you should have upwards of like 20 of those.

if your playing a red deck get a card called conflagrate.its a really powerfull card that can wipe out a opponet in one shot if you have enough mana.

See if you can find Scrye! magazines. They often have "tournament deck" articles, which give you ideas on what to play. Be aware, some (many?) people outside of tournaments won't necessarily play that way, and some play with _HUGE_ decks which may leave you at a disadvantage with a 40 card deck, when they have 100 sitting in their draw pile.

There was (I don't know if it's still out there) a computer site that let you build decks from all available cards, too.

One word of caution: Don't run out and buy black lotus, any of the moxes, or huge creatures just yet. Play around with small critter decks, for a while, and ask folks you end up playing with if they have spares, or doubles, they are willing to part with. It can be a lot cheaper than dealing with what card shops seem to want to charge for something that basically came in a bubblegum wrapper once.

They don't call it cardboard crack for nothing, so be careful!
