MS Money & others

Hello Everyone,

Let me again say thanks for the welcome and great suggestions. As expected I continue to have a slew of questions:

1)I used MS Money with my PPC as a virtual checkbook so to speak. I notice that the T3 comes w/an expense program that pales in comparison, in that I can only enter expenses. I liked MS Money because I could enter and expense and it would be deducted from my bank total.

Is there a PALM app that compares?

2) What's the difference between a soft and a hard reset?

Pocket PC had a freeware that allowed the user to shot down the PPC similar to an XP shutdown...is there such a thing for the T3?

3)Closing apps:

Is there any way to close apps once I'm done w/them. I notice the little house on the navigation bar lists my most recent apps....can I close them (again--PPC allowed me to close the programs that I was not using).

Does this apply to the T3?

4)Are there any back-up apps (freeware or shareware)?

5)Can I run programs from my card? If so, how do I do that or is it just for storage purposes?

Well that's all....for now!:p

I'll stress "my opinion," because you'll get 12 different answers on here form people who use stuff that THEY like and that works for THEM; I can't speak to the "money/checkbook" issue other than there is a freeware app called "ma tirelire" or something like that, which seemed like the most functional - It seemed extensive yet simple, and didn't crash on the T3.

Regarding other points I feel more strongly:

Soft reset does no "erasing" or damage; it just "sets things back to normal startup." A hard reset puts the unit back in the "newly opened box" condition. Make sure your data can be restored either with hotsync (not my preference) or SD CARD BACKUP (my definite preference) before performing it. There are other lesser known forms of reset, the most popular being called a "warm reset;" to do this you hold down the "up-scroll" front button while depressing the pin in the back. This provides more controlled "startup." Several apps allow a soft reset without pressing the pin, and I (now, after it's fixed!) recommend "mReset" also available as freeware at

http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/mreset.shtml

The very first "opening day" verson had a bad loop in it which caused me to have to do a HARD RESET, but 1.01 is great and it's only 1k in size! 760 bytes to be exact.

Instant Off: Great freeware called "upstroke" (available same place) -- you can configure it to use tap or stroke to turn unit off - I love it. If you program from Right button TO THE SCREEN, it will turn off the T3 even with slider closed. Just start in bottom right corner and stroke up about 1/4". Super!

BACKUP: Your most important question!!
Hands down I'd recommend "CardBackup" from jkware.

Jason is just the greatest and I TESTED THIS APP twice by actually doing a hard reset two times -- flawless. I used it the other day for the debacle with "mReset." You can have up to 8 backups, timed for any time of the day (or not); I use 5PM with "auto shutoff" turned OFF in case I'm working on something; it's also set for 5AM daily WITH AUTO SHUT ON. That way it powers up, backs up in anywhere from 5-20 seconds depending how many things you changed, and shuts itself off. You can also elect files NOT to back up, if you wish. As you get more and more into this, you may decide you want a security (lock/encryption) program -- BackupBuddy VFS had some serious issues with not properly restoring "locked databases" or locked parts of the security program - resulting in backup failure OR your not being able to access the security controls to unlock the unit. No such glitches with CardBackup - and the next version of CardBackup will have encryption for your backup files, too. This is not as good an idea as people might think, but Jason is doing it out of popular demand.

RUNNING APPS FROM THE CARD: When you do this, a temporary copy of that app is made in RAM, then deleted when you exit. You have to go to the card to launch it form the "main launcher" folder on that card. Tealpoint have a great app called TealAlias which assigns an asterisk (*) to the named app and LEAVES THAT ALIAS in whatever category you want. When you tap on it, TealAlias launches the app AND ALSO WHATEVER DATABASES that app calls for (they can all go on the card, and in ANY folder you designate). For example if you have a database of restaurants in different cities, you can elect to launch the database app and ONLY the dbase for "Seattle" or "Boston" -- not all of them. None of the dbases or the app take up room in RAM. Very cool.

So there are only 2 apps here you have to pay for; CardBackup is $12 or so, and TealAlias is $14 or $17 or something. The others are FREE, so you're spending around $30 for 5 apps, or $6/app. Not bad. You'll find that some of the FREEWARE available often does a better job than the expensive commercial stuff -- especially utilities. SysTool, TomCatalog and Filez are all VERY VERY GOOD -- and freeware.

Hope this helps but be sure and check out some other input - try stuff out if you can, and pick what best FOR YOU.

Happy hunting!! Fun, isn't it??!!

I believe the above response covered most of your questions. Regarding MS Money, I personally use Pocket Quicken since I use Quicken on my desktop. I would suggest going to PalmGear at http://www.palmgear.com/ and doing a search and you will find numerious applications for MS Money. I'm sure others have their favorite site but PalmGear has tons of applications and I'm sure you'll be able to find what you need.

As for resets, I would suggect visiting http://205.141.210.149/SRVS/CGI-BIN...5,K=4183,Sxi=6,useTemplate=Case.tem,CASE=887. This is Palm's page that explains the differences between types of resets along with a "how to".

Someone may correct me on this but you really don't close apps on a Palm as you do on a Pocket PC. You simply switch from one to the other.

Hope this helps and welcome to the forum!

I used the bespoke Palm Back Up card, but think that my copy had some problems with it. PTL, can the CardBackup back up onto a, say 256MB SD card which you have other programmes on or do you need to keep switching them over? I'm using my PC primarily as back up at the moment, but that isn't always the best policy. If I can put CardBackup and my main add on apps onto a card (obviously if this can be done then the number of back ups saved may be affected) as large as a 500+ card, I'll be over them moon!

CardBackup is hotsynced on to the handheld. The first thing it says when you tap on it is "you don't have the latest copy on your card . . ." OR when you go to set up, instructions and the several little "text baloons" indicate how to do that.

The app is then copied in to MAIN LAUNCHER (where your other "card apps" appear when you select category/card on the Palm). When you do your first backup, NAME IT something like "CdBU1" (my choice) and then backup. Go into "Schedule" and select days and times you want it to be done. I do Cdbu1 at 5AM with "auto shut-off ON," and Cdbu2 at 5PM daily with "auto shut-off OFF" so it doesn't interfere with work and then power off.

Of course it will "co-exist" with other apps on the card;" it's put on the card in "Launcher" so that you could easily restore everything without having a file utility to look for another folder (which you obviously wouldn't after a hard reset, unless you have it in flash). If a hard reset is performed, go to top right corner and select your backup card, hit "CardBackup" on the card, and hit "restore."

Done. It will tell you to soft reset - and then EVERYTHING will be normal. Of course you'll have to do the preliminary "set time, set digitizer" nonsense and you'll get system sounds (default) right after the hard reset -- endure this patiently -- and icons for apps instead of the "List" view you may be using. After the restore, however, all will be back to normal because your saved prefs will be restored.

I have seen NO CONFLICTS with CardBackup including the elusive "TealLock" encrypted file that BackupBuddy VFS messes up. CardBackup saves and restores it intact.

Coupled with JackFlash, you should be able to do a hard reset at 4:02PM, and be FULLY back to normal at 4:03 or slightly earlier. One minute flat. With CardBackup alone and no JackFlash, depending on apps you have loaded, it still shouldn't take more than 90 seconds. IT ROCKS.
