Hi Jan....

Glad your first PT sessions was good. Let me know how traction makes you feel.....I always thought it would feel good on my back. I had traction on my neck before I had a cervical fusion and it was painful afterwarRAB. I hope you get good benefit from it...

Got my MRI results back. I had been complaining of pain in buttocks and back of thighs. The results follow. I am an almost 73 year old woman. Any comments will be appreciated. I am on mobic and a muscle relaxer.

Lower lurabar degenerative changes most pronounced at L4-5 with midline disc herniation, severe facet arthropathy and Grade 1 antherolisthesis resulting in severe spinal stenosis and bilateral forminal narrowing.

Lynn I feel energized and loose today after the PT yesterday. Am looking forward to going again on Thursday at which time the therapist will start me on some exercise.

It probably is and you can get personal ones, here in the UK we have clinics called Pain Management Clinics and through the specialist there he gave me a personal one which I use when my back is really bad and it does help ease the pain and the personal ones are so discreet and can be a real help when you're in between PT sessions.

Jan...

That is great girl! I hope it continues to make you feel good. Can i borrow some energy from you? LOL Keep in touch....

Hi Jan D, my Dad used to have lurabar traction as he has a slipped disc(accident at work then they found the genetic problems as well, Lurabar spondoylolithesis and Spinocerebellar Degeneration) and he used to say he wished he could have the traction everyday as it used to make him feel so much better so I really hope it works for you as suffering from back pain myself since the age of 9 I know how crippling it can be, and if traction does relieve your pain then I'm really glad for you.
You could also ask your specialist about a machine called a TENS(Trans Electrical Neuro Stimulation) machine its a little machine that senRAB out electrical impulses that has 2 or 4 paRAB that you stick on your back either side of your spine or wherever it hurts and then turn the machine on and most have a booster pulse for when the pain is bad and my Dad and myself swear by ours as they really do help with the pain.

I had my second PT session today. Kept me longer on traction and longer on the electrical stimulation machine. 5 minutes on the bike and then he gave me some exercises to do on the table which can be done at home. A little sore this morning, but so far so good. Hope it keeps improving for me.

I am starting physical therapy on Monday. Among other things, the doctor has prescribed lurabar traction. I hope PT helps.

Hi JanD....

I wish you well in your treatment plan. Hopefully this will help your pain. I never tried lurabar traction.....let me know how that goes for you. I often thought if someone would pull my body in 2 different ways, it would feel so good. LOL I also often wanted someone to step on my back LOL My husband raised the hair on his head when i asked him to do that...just seemed stepping on my back would feel so good. Of course now.........with the fusion, I dont feel a need for that. And of course would NEVER do that. Good luck to you and keep in touch. Let me know how traction is for you!

Oh, I few days ago, I was chatting with a friend of mine and he told me that someone he knows, a 85 year old woman just had back surgery.....so age for sure has nothing to do with back pain :)

GOOD LUCK and keep in touch...

Lynn thanks for your fast reply. My hubby was in Japan during the Korean war and he said they give massages by walking on your back. LOL

I will keep your posted regarding my PT.
Janice

Stitchsim, that sounRAB like the machine they hook me up to at PT. They put the electrodes on my back where it hurts and then it emits a pulsing heat. It feels good.

Janice

Glad to hear your PT sessions are going well and the bike will make you sore the next day but the exercises you were taught on the table that you can do at home will hopefully take some of the pain out when you're at home and in between sessions and know what they taught me, lie on my back bend my knees and then pull one leg up and bring knee as close to chest as can, does wonders for me when my back is really aching.

I dont know if you will read this but 1st dont have anyone walk on your back. 2 you are going to need narcotic pain killers eventually cause unfurtanately your pain will not be going anywhere. 3 traction does give good temp. relief, see if your ins. or medicaid will pay for your own mechanical traction machine(mine did and it helps when im desperate) chronic pain sucks i hope you get relief

Had my first PT session today. So far so good. I was on the traction machine for 15 minutes and then 15 minutes on electrical stimulation and heat on my lower back. Going again on Thursday...will keep you posted.

Janice
