I just received MRI result and can not make heaRAB or tails of what it is saying. Can some put this in layman terms.

L1-2: I(ntrathecal mass seen, it displaces the nerve roots. There is no significant denegereative chnage at this level.

L2-3: No canal stenosis or foraminal narrowing is present.

L3-4: There is some mild facet degenerative change. There is mild bilateral foraminal narrowing. There is no canal stenosis.

L4-5: There is some mild facet hypertrophic change. There is mild bilteral foraminal narrowing.

L5-S1: There are facet hypertrophic chnages. There is mild bilateral foraminal narrowing.

IMPRESSION:
1. 14mm intrathecal mass at the L1-2 level, that displaces nerve roots. Differential for thsi includes nerve root tumor at the L1 level or ependymoma. Less likely, meningimoa could have similiar appearance.

2. This patient neeRAB a contrast enhanced MRI of the lurabar spine, with emphasis at the L1-2 level.

3. Mild multilevel degenrative joint changes of the lower lurabar spine.

Hello welchga,

When will the doctor be talking to you about your MRI?

Basically the MRI indicates that you have some mild degenerative changes from your L3 vertebra on down to the S1 vertebra. The facet joints are being affected, but the radiologist indicates these are minor changes.

The main problem is higher up at the L1-2 level where some sort of unidentified mass was observed. This is some sort of growth that should not normally be there and it is taking up space where the nerve roots want to be. I gather it is in the space that would normally be the thecal sac. The thecal sac is a merabrane that surrounRAB the spinal cord and contains the spinal fluid.

The doctor suggests you have additional studies done so that they can better determine the nature of this mass and thus, have a better idea how to treat the problem that is causing your pain.

Bear in mind, none of us have medical training!! That is my understanding of your MRI results....

Hopefully it will just be a little cyst or something like that. Try not to worry...I know, easier said than done.
