There is a simple way to add bitrate to your MP3's. A lot of people are already using this software to add file tags like this:

My awesome song.[160Kb 44KHz 3'35].mp3

The software will do it for you! You can add and remove the tags in seconds. 1,500 songs will take less than 1 minute, and it will even search all subdirectories for you.

Yeah I would love to do that for everyone but that would require me to change 1500 songs... That is just unhappy chore all around.

thats all well and good but will be completely moot once these clients gain the ability to recognize much more than just the filename when doing searches. I guess what I'm talking about is metadata, like how the new compression things coming out have the ability to insert file information into the data of the file itself with the ability to be read by the software reading it. Hopefully it will be all well and good for the file-sharers, although its primary purpose is for business to increase their profit. Although maybe one day soon we will have the ability to insert our own information into a file, such as our personal opinions of a particular songs meaning and allow our friends to search through that. That would be a very good improvement over this limited filename/size we got now.
 
hey, the header of each mp3 file contains the bitrate (as well as the mp3-tags (which unfortunately are seldom accurately used). however, why can't the client read this information and transfer it additionally to the file? so one could specify advanced searches like "i want only mp3s with bitrate between 128 and 256". don't know how to cope with vbr, but they have a range specification - maybe that's available in the same way ...
