Moving to the USA...

Hi, I'm moving to New York city in a month from Toronto. I am currenty on a GSM network (Fido) with a motorola V400. Just wondering what would be the best carrier to go on, especially for long distance to Canada. I really don't care what kind of network to be on (CDMA, GSM, etc...). As well, what your suggestion of phone to get. The help would be greatly appreciated.

Verizon has plans that include long distance to and roaming in Canada. They will also apparently look up your Canadian credit rating if you don't have credit established in the states.
