Moving to London - What Phone/Carrier?

Hi, I currently live in the USA and use Verizon Wireless.

I will be moving to London in the next 4 to 16 months and am looking into phones and carriers.

For those that have experience, what service and/or deal would you recommend? I'll be a student - not business - so I wont' be a really heavy user. Is pre-paid the way to go or will getting a contract be the better option? (I'll be there for at least a year.)

Finally, does Verizon have a deal with one the UK providers to ease the transition?

Thanks.

Verizon operates on a technology (CDMA) that is incompatible with the techonologies (GSM and WCDMA) in London. Buy a phone and service when you get there. You should look at the Pay as you go plans if you are going to be there less than a year.

I will be there for a year or more - that is 12 months or more, so I'd qualify for the providers' 12 month programs. But would the pay as you go or another program be more of a value? Like I said, I won't be a heavy user except for maybe the occasional call to the States.

I skimmed through some of their websites, and they are all essentially the same - T Mobile was enticing with 600 free texts per month. I'm thinking of just getting a tri/uad band phone and then using it when/if I come back to the States.

That being said, I don't know which providor is the best in terms of quality, calling the USA, travelling through Europe, etc. What service do most people in London have? That is, virtually everyone in the northeast has Verizon here - is that the case with London or is it divided equally between Orange-Vodaphone-T-Mobile, etc.?

Thanks.

Every network has the same coverage in London.Vodafone might do a deal with Verizon since they own them. Also if your interested we have 3G Coverage everywhere and you can get a 3G Handset for about 90GBP (Motorola E770v or SE V600i)
