my wife and i are moving to germany because i am going to be stationed there for two years...i am looking for two unlocked world phones that preferably have bluetooth, and a camera (flip phone is a must) and any recommendations on carriers overseas.

just about any GSM phone would work great overseas what kind of features you want? (from what i've seen yuo can get phones cheap over there when you sign up with a carrier, not positive but i could swear like 2 months ago you could get a 6680 for free with a year contract with most of the carriers over there)

Hi Diablo. You sound like you are military. I thought they frowned on people having cameras on base

Of all the carriers over in Germany, T-Mobile is local there as well as Stateside. Vodafone is European, but they have a stake in Verizon. Vodafone over in Europe is GSM and 3G, but Verizon is CDMA which is an incompatible mix. I don't believe Cingular is partnered with any European carriers. I mention this because you may be able to find a plan with T-Mobile that would allow you to roam back in the States without international roaming charges.

That said, unlocked clams with cameras and Bluetooth are relatively abundant. Motorola has many of them such as RAZR and its variants (V3i and V3x). Samsung has a few (they only recently started with Bluetooth). The SGH-E720 and SGH-Z500 come to mind. For Nokia there are only a couple (6260 and N90 come to mind). Nokia's clamshells leave much to be desired IMO. Not sure about LG. I think they may have a couple 3G phones with cameras & BT. Sony Ericsson has the Z520, Z600 and V800.

In researching a phone there are several sites you can look at for information (www.phonescoop.com, www.gsmarena.com, www.phonearena.com and others). You will need a phone that works in the 900 and 1800 MHz bands for Europe. It should cover the 800 (aka 850) and/or 1900 to work in the Americas. Be sure to find a carrier with extensive coverage in your area. If you roam onto another network it will decrease your battery life by up to 10 percent.

over in europe coverage isnt much of a problem last i checked

check a coverage map for just about any european carrier, all ove europe is a dark green

and last i checked roaming does not decrease battery faster unless your have to change to an anolog signal (like rural areas on cdma)i dont think they even have an anolog system over there

It's there Thando. Depending on your GSM carrier, the phone will perform a home network scan once every 6 to 60 minutes (in 6 minute increments per the GSM specification). T-Mobile phones in the US does it every 6 minutes. During that time (~3 seconds) the receiver is constantly on and that can drop the battery life by 10%.
