Moving to Egypt

Hi all,

I currently live in the States and will be moving to Cairo, Egypt in about a month or so. I will be travelling to Europe and probably other parts of Africa/Asia (though that'll be much more infrequent). And I'll be returning to the States to visit family on occasion.

I have very basic needs when it comes to a phone. Really it just needs to dial, hang up, and have a screen and phonebook. Bluetooth would be nice, but I can live without it. I certainly don't care if it has a camera. Everything else is gravy. But it needs to work as widely as possible. Egypt, Europe and the States are a must - I'll take Asia and the rest of Africa if I can get it.

I also really don't know the first thing about service outside the States, so if anyone can make suggestions about quality services in Cairo and the best way to make sure it works as widely as possible, that would be most appreciated.

i want to help but i dont really understand what u are asking about ??? about the phone u should get or the service providers here in egypt ????
 
I guess both, actually. Any recommendations on either front will be a great help - especially if you'd recommend one provider over another.

Also, as you're in Cairo, I'm wondering if it would be better to get the phone before I get there or if I should wait and get it there. Which would be easier and/or cheaper?

well i dont really know about the prices cuz i dont know what do u preffer
here we have nokia\sonyericsson\motorola and samsung mostly ...... i will be happy to tell u the price of a certain model if u want

about the providers u should know witch area u will stay in first cuz we have 2 providers mobinil and vodafone and both aer good but some areas recieve better signal from one and not the other....
 
Not really sure which phone I want, so I'm looking for suggestions as to something basic that's going to be reliable and work in Egypt, Europe and the States. Do you have a recommendation as to which phone? I prefer flip phones, but could live with a flip or a bar phone.

Regarding coverage, I'm going to be spending most of my time in Ma'adi, but I'm sure that I'm going to be all over. Which provider has better coverage in that area?

i think vodafone is better in ma'adi and all over the country now.

still when u come u will find alot of plans so u must see what will be more usefull for u and dont worry i will help with that

i think u should go for a quad band phone since u want it to be reliable in the states too

as for the phone.... use this search engine

if u are staying in egypt for long .... i suggest u get one from here cuz of the warranty

I checked out Vodafone's site and they look like a good option.

What are your thoughts on the Nokia 6125? If you think it's a good phone, what are the prices on this phone there?

Any others that you might recommend?

I'm going to be in Egypt for at least two years. Your point about the warranty is a good one.
