Moving cursor while typing text?

Sorry, I'm probably not going to explain this very well...but...

On my old iPhone I could touch, hold, then drag to get a "magnifying glass" view of text and allow me to select where I wanted the active cursor to be. When I do that with my Droid Eris it keeps selecting chunks of text. Is there an easy way for me to choose where I want the cursor to be with my finger?

you should be able to move the text over by touch/drag if it's a single line input (texting, for example), then tap to place the cursor.

no trackball on the eris, right?

yea , you should be able to tap where you want the cursor to be with your finger .

On the HTC Hero (which I LOVE) you can move the cursor very easily while writing text by using the trackball to move it.
